Writing Up Life

Writing is hard work.

No, seriously. It is relentless research, proofreading and mistakes. It's like life in general in that you can never get it perfect, it generates some of the finest and worst moments in you and if you say the wrong thing at the wrong time you'll lose followers but sometimes... It just flows, perferctly!

Every writer has their style, genre, niche and angle. Perhaps the only limitation to this is becoming typecast into a certain pidgeonhole, like certain horror story writers, but it doesn't seem to harm their book sales so who am I to judge? Likewise even the most avid of readers can get 'stuck' on a particular style or genre of book.

My first blog, Whispering In The Wind was very popular. I wrote about morals, ideals and realities in an entertaining way and garnered much of a following. I would get up around 5am and write for two hours, before the hustle and bustle of daily life kicked in. It satisfied me and sustained me through tough times and made good times all the more enjoyable.

Now, once again, I find myself at the start of Spring actively wanting to get up early and write. The old tingle of seeking achievement has been resurrected. Ah, but what to write about? WHispering In The Wind came to an end when the Summer turned to the Autumn and I no longer had that early morning window (damn you, seasonal affective disorder) but in a second and large part of the reason to stop was I simply ran out of things to write about.

It is said that one should 'write about what you know'. This is practical because I don't want to spend my life researching, and I'm a little lazy. Yep, you heard me - lazy.

It is a fact that when you get in a flow as a writer you are in your element. Just like life once again - those hours/days where everything flows are extremely satisfying. All the traffic lights are green or change when you get to the junctions, serendipitous things float your way, you generally coast from one job to another with a whistle and a bounce in your step. Everyone likes those days but what of the other ones, I mean most other days, when nothing flows at all?

What a lovely sentiment, and it is of course great advice for life in general. Thing is to make a plan for when life doesn't live up to it's full flow potential.
